Paul Theroux Has Written This Story Before

Paul Theroux has written this story before, and this may be a dying kind of prose, but it is still worth reading, if only because it is a great hyper-exaggeration of what I would assume many Westerners feel like upon entering their foreign post, expecting to build that school and save those children, only to find themselves desperately insufficient and unable to make the grand impact they had planned.

Whether or not we are all victims of the culture to this extent is another question; but I am going to say, very briefly, 'No.'

But then, Chiang Mai is not Malabo. Nor am I Altman.
